Handicaps in Speaking English
Everyone considers that language is very important. In order to widen your knowledge in science and technology, improving our English mastery is necessary. There many textbooks written in English, and a great many imported films use English the medium of communication. It is said that one who has a good English mastery will have a great chance to master the world.
Unfortunately, English is a second or even a foreign language in Indonesia. As a second or foreign language, we have a lot of handicaps in learning English. It seems that speaking the language is quite a difficult thing to do. It is said that if we have a strong will to learn and practice it, nothing is impossible. In fact, a great many students tend to be passive or feel discouraged to learn English.
There are several reason why they tend to be passive.
1.      Students are worried about making mistakes. I assured you that is quite common to make mistakes in learning English. Why? Because English is not our mother tongue. What happens to English students? What do they think about making mistakes? They said they you will get nowhere unless you are ready to make mistakes. Those who never make mistakes, never do anything, the saying goes. So, again, don’t be worried about making mistakes while you are learning to speak a foreign or second language.
2.      Several students feel shy to practice English. As far as I know, there are great deals of English students who never practice their English. They say that they feel shy even to speak with their fellow students.
3.      They study to get many certificates. Many students are willing to finish their study as soon as possible so that they get their certificates from the institutes. They hardly pay attention to whether they are qualified for their English mastery or not.
In conclusion, I would like to suggest the following things so that the students realize their handicaps in learning English:
1.      There are many ways to improve our English mastery. Don’t be worried about making mistakes. If once you feel you fail you speak well in front of your friends, try and try again. I am sure that at last you will succeed.
2.      You can create an English conversation club in your neighborhood. By doing so, you will have a place to practice your English.
3.      Learning by “trial and error”. By joining such a group, you have a good opportunity to enlarge your vocabulary, and beside that, you will find somebody else to correct your mistakes.
Well readers, hopefully after reading this short article and following the above suggestion, you can improve your ability of speaking English.

BUILDING CONFIDANCE TO SPEAK ENGLISH

Many students have studied English for years, but quite often they can’t speak English. Probably, you are one of them. An acceptable reason is that you have studied English in a passive setting. However, you have at least two important assets: an abundant store of knowledge about grammar and language in general and you own unique experience. It means that speaking is actually accessible to you.
It should be noticed that to acquire the language skills, especially speaking, you need to speak a lot. Obviously, we need people with whom we can communicate in that language. Native speakers, of course, can share the language with you and so can your classmates. But you should realize that it sounds impossible to get everybody in the class to speak English, though you know you have mastered the grammar – at least some simple English sentence patterns and a certain level of vocabulary. The predictable cause is that you are afraid to make mistakes, and you feel so because you lack confidence.
This is how to get it. Make a promise – and try not to break it – with only one or two friends (more suggestible: classmates because you can meet every day) to speak English anytime and anywhere you meet. Don’t think that you want to show off your speaking ability. You are learning you speak English. That’s all.
Fluency is not the first thing got pursue as it will come by itself to you. It is more important to take correctness into consideration. However, because you know each other and you are learning to speak, you should never feel ashamed or afraid to make mistakes.
Remember that acquire the language, you have to go through a process that includes making mistakes. If you do make mistake, this is good, because if you actively pay attention to your mistakes and especially the corrections, you can learn very rapidly.
If you find some unknown words when you are practicing to speak, you can say them in Indonesian first, and don’t forget to look them up in your dictionary afterwards. The more you practice your English, the more confidence you get and the less mistakes you make.
Just prove that in month of speaking English everyday with one or two classmates, you will get a feeling of confidence whenever you speak English. Then you can try to speak to some other friends – who are probably interested in joining your “conversation club “– and also to your English teachers or even to native speakers. Here, the fluency comes to you!
Since each member of the class has his own unique experience in learning, each one will know different things. If you listen and ask for and accept feedback from other class members, you will learn a great deal.
Let’s make our passive English active!

To speak English that well, we can exercise it at any time with our friends.  Do not be afraid to make mistakes because to obtain the language, you have to go through a process that includes making mistakes.
